Addressing absorption in South Africa

 

  1. What is the BIG problem with Youth Skills Development and the youth in South Africa?
  • It is estimated that more than 5 million learners have been helped through learnerships over the past 20 years in South Africa, but less than 5% of these learners were absorbed into jobs and full-time working communities.

 

  1. What are the root causes?
  • We have found that the problem lies much deeper than the high unemployment rate in our economy and have emphasized our efforts on working on the route causes poor job absorption.
  • The deeper problems are as follows:
  • The youth have limited self-belief and deservedness of job security.
  • Community imprinted beliefs such as black tax and other limiting beliefs hinder career development and fulfilment in job satisfaction.
  • The income earned by the youth becomes a community responsibility that hinders personal financial progress and well-being.
  • The youth struggle from within to find their identity, purpose and passion in life.
  • The youth struggle to find job opportunities that are aligned to their identity, purpose, passion, areas of talent and skills.
  • The youth are not business or job-ready/savvy.
  • There is a general lack of commitment, passion, enthusiasm and self-belief in their capabilities.
  • The youth require career development guidance and an understanding of the opportunities the business and corporate environment offer.

 

  1. What do we do:
  • We have been working to give the youth opportunities in 12-month learnership programmes for the past few years.
  • We source struggling youth, interview them, match their passion with a career development path. We focus on cultivating a new identity, self-belief and purpose with-in our learners and provide them with hosting opportunities to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to develop their careers.
  • We have developed a training program that focuses and deal with all the aspects mentioned in point 2 and 3 above.
  • The course content helps the students deal with inner psychic patterns related to skills, beliefs, values, identity, and the environment.
  • We help them to understand the wheel and balance of life.

Learning

Assessment

  • Learning is assessed through classroom activities, formative, and summative assessments.
  • Our facilitators are trained to assist the learners to complete most of their assignments with them in the classroom.
  • Learners that are not yet competent after their first assessments will be allowed a second attempt.
